What Is Feng Shui and How Does It Apply to Gardens?

Article provided by Wicker Paradise.

Febg Shui, simply put, is an ancient Chinese belief system that revolves around chi or energy. In this belief there are both good and bad energies and there are certain things that you can do to encourage good chi and keep the bad away from you.

One important feature of Feng Shui is knowing the bagua of your home and/or garden. The bagua is essentially a map of the different energies that pertain to your life, each of which need to be balanced with certain elements in order to help that part of your life reach its fullest potential.

For example, if the bagua of your garden is missing its wealth section, according to this belief system, then you are much more likely to lose money. On the other hand, a well-designed relationship bagua can contribute to a long and happy marriage.

One of the ways to this can be done is by keeping everything in balance. This not only requires keeping colors in balance but also the different elements of wood, earth, fire, water, and metal. This is why when planning a garden, you should plan ways to include all of the elements.

However, any one of these elements in too great an amount can overpower the rest would put that part of your life out of balance. A few clay pots for the earth element, a birdbath for water, and some wicker furniture for wood are all simple and easy ways to include these elements in balanced amounts.
